Vehicles :
If you are traveling on the ferry with a vehicle, ensure that you select the correct vehicle type and enter the vehicle length. Most cars, vans and 4WD's are under 5.5m in length and 1.6m high. If your vehicle is larger than this, you will need the exact dimensions (length and height) to ensure that the right amount of space is booked for your vehicle on your particular New Zealand ferry crossing.
Sailing with a Rental Car
Some rental car companies do not allow their rental cars on the Wellington to Picton ferry crossing. If this is the case, they will provide you with another rental car once you reach your destination, so you do not need to book your rental car on the ferry crossing. Please find below a list of the rental car companies that do and don't allow their cars to be taken on the Wellington to Picton ferry.
Any bookings made with cars that subsequently need to be cancelled, will incur the $40 cancellation processing fee.
Because the Wellington to Picton Ferry is built to take motor vehicles, there is a big benefit in hiring a vehicle that the rental company will allow you to take between the islands.
This way, you don't have to unload, check in bags, sign off paperwork and rehire when you get to the other end - you save time and hassle by driving straight on and straight off!
We therefore recommend that you hire your vehicle from a company that allows you to take one vehicle between islands, rather than hiring multiple vehicles between islands. Below is a Comparison of Hire Types
| Terminal Arrival |
Check in at vehicle marshalling |
Locate vehicle drop-off zone
Walk to rental car counter in arrivals terminal (or other location in city)

We recommend you look for a rental car or campervan company who will allow you to take your rental car across Cook Strait. You can find more information about Campervan Companies here and rental car companies here.
» Note - there are rental car offices at both the Wellington and the Picton ferry terminals.
